Training
Avoca V.F.D., along with Piney Flats V.F.D. & East V.F.D. conducted training evolutions in Entry, SCBA, Rescue, and Positive Pressure Smoke Ventilation. Two sessions were conducted in the evening and other sessions conducted on a Saturday afternoon, to accommodate member’s work schedules. The sessions allowed members to improve their skill levels and also gave our recently re-activated Junior Firefighter candidates an opportunity to observe these skills and participate as appropriate.
The training site was a dwelling that is scheduled for demolition, and was made available by the property owner. All training was performed in a safe and environmentally friendly atmosphere, with no live fire, and smoke was generated using a generator furnished by the Sullivan County Firefighter’s Association with non-toxic artificial smoke chemicals. The artificial smoke does not photograph well, however smoke conditions inside the dwelling were very dense and closely simulated actual fire conditions.
All evolutions were performed in “real time” and appropriate PPE was required for all participants. Training officers/observers were Senior Officers with interior observations performed utilizing Thermal Imaging Cameras from participating departments.
Each of the participating Departments furnished mobile support vehicles as necessary for the successful completion of the training, with pumpers, cascade trucks, and other specialized vehicles on the scene.
A total attendance of 35 firefighters made this training a successful training exercise.
Participants had the opportunity to practice each of the skills by rotating duties in subsequent evolutions.
Detailed critique sessions were held after each evolution as learning opportunities for participants.
